In short, it will take you a few days, or at least a few weeks to make digital flashcards for your first 600 or so basic vocabulary words.
Language Learning with Anki Flashcards
I’m currently in the process of making 600 or so flashcards for the basic vocabulary words for my target languages – that is, for French, Spanish, Chinese and Tagalog.
I’m starting off gathering the images for each of the cards using Google Images. All I do is have 2 windows open side by side while having a list of the basic vocabulary words in one of the windows.
For my basic vocab list, I’m using this list from Gabriel Wyner.
Why does it take so long to make the basic set of flashcards?
I wasn’t sure how long it was going to take me when I started. I was just eager to get started with the motivation that if I learned and memorised these basic vocab in my target languages, then I would know a large percentage of the most frequently used and useful words.
I haven’t done something like this before, and as of today, I’m about one-third through the list of words in terms of gathering the images.
My next step will be to gather the audio pronunciations for all these words from Forvo.com – and adding all those together time-wise will take some time. The images are generic and can be used for all languages, but the audio pronunciations will be specific to each language.
Don’t Lose Focus. Keep Motivated and Persistent to Learn Languages.
You may also get busy with the day-to-day busy-ness of life as I have, and the past few days I haven’t been able to work on language learning – only passively by listening to foreign language music and soemtimes using memrise.
Only today, during this break time am I able to get back to gathering images and I thought I’d update you all on my progress as well. =)
Update: It took me 25 days to collect all images
Today is 25/09/2014, and it took me about 25 days to collect all the Google Images for over 600 basic vocabulary words! It took a little longer than I thought it would. I have been working on collecting the images at night, after work and after dinner at home. Sometimes I took 30 minutes per day, and other days I did skip the language learning work as I was busy, but I eventually got it done.
The next step is to start gathering the actual vocabulary words in my target languages and the relevant audio file of correct pronunciation.
